On 16 February 2018, “The Art of Banksy” exhibition opened at BIKINI BERLIN. On the first floor of the concept shopping mall, more than 60 original drawings, paintings, sculptures and previously unpublished photos are evidence of Banksy’s ascent from graffiti sprayer to internationally lauded street artist. His most famous work, “Girl with Balloon”, from the year 2004 is also on show here. Most of the exhibition’s pieces come from private collections.
Banksy is renowned all over the world for his stencils on walls, streets and bridges. But despite his fame and popularity, he remains an enigma. Only a very close circle of trusted confidantes knows who the man behind the pseudonym really is. Many even doubt whether Banksy is an individual person and suspect that there is an artist collective behind his work. But despite all the mystery surrounding him, Banksy, with his part humorous, part provocative political motives, is without a doubt one of the most formative artists of our time.
Even his long-time, former companion Steve Lazarides refuses to reveal Banksy’s true identity. Lazarides was Banksy’s agent for eleven years and also one of the pioneers of the street art movement. He is therefore not only an expert when it comes to this art form, but also the curator of the Banksy exhibition at BIKINI BERLIN.
