The story of MAC Cosmetics began in the 1980s in Toronto and, like so many company success stories, was born out of necessity. Make-up artist and photographer Frank Toskan and beauty salon owner Frank Angelo were frustrated with the quality and appearance of the make-up that they were using on photo shoots so they decided to develop their own. They mixed the first products in their kitchen at home and soon aroused the interest of their colleagues, fellow make-up artists and photographers, who were the first to place their orders.
But their big breakthrough came when the first magazines found out about the products and enthusiastically reported on them. Through word of mouth, news about the label soon spread and in March 1984 the first MAC cosmetics counter opened in a department store in Toronto. And once popstar Madonna was spotted wearing a MAC lipstick and then later a MAC T-shirt, the make-up brand started taking the world by storm.
